Changing my writing routine

I see so many articles going around writing groups about getting into a routine and write every day. The message from these articles is that this is how you are going to be a “real” writer.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the writer’s of these articles must lead quite a predicable life!

At the moment, I haven’t been able to write every day like I was planning to. For a while, I was beating myself up about it. I wasn’t having a lunch beak as I would be driving my kids to school. By the time evening came around, I was too tired to do anything. Getting up early to write also wasn’t the best plan for my general health and stress levels.

So I came up with a new routine.

Changing directions in your story

Have you ever had one idea for a story, planned it out to go in one direction, only to find that it could go somewhere else?

This is what I’m starting to find in my story… there are a number of ways it could go, depending on the type of town my main character is from. She grew up in regional Victoria and it could either be a large regional center, or a smaller town that is getting smaller as people are moving away. This will be relevant a bit further along in the story.

My 13 year old at Melbourne Cube Days 2015

Earlier this year, my 13 year old attended the Australian Nationals 2015 run by Speedcubing Australia. He had an amazing weekend, and a few weeks later, took part in the Melbourne Cube Days 2015.

Following these, we were talking about books and whether there were any books that featured kids who cubed. We went looking, but couldn’t find anything! So, my 13 year old has set me a challenge – write some!

I have written one book so far. Cubing for Chronic Fatigue is about a boy called Tony who uses his cube to raise money for the Chronic Fatigue Association after his little brother is diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue. It’s part of my Green Oaks Primary School series and we’re hoping to release it early in 2016.
