Day 15: Serve

Day 15: Serve

It’s Day 15 of the Mastering the Habits of Great Authors challenge. Today’s challenge is to serve my readers. You can read the whole challenge here.

This challenge is timely as I’m preparing a survey for my Accidental WAHM stories. I want to find out what issues WAHMs (work at home Mums) face that would be good to include in the stories I’m writing, as well as the format they would like to read the stories.

Day 14: Brand

Day 14: Brand

It’s Day 14 of the Mastering the Habits of Great Writers challenge. Today’s challenge is all about branding. You can read the whole challenge here.

Name: The first part of the challenge is to choose a name. I’m still trying to work out what name to publish under, I blogged about it a while ago here.

While I’m deciding, I registered the domain melissawrites.com.au (this one) and changed my Facebook page to “Melissa Writers“.

Right now, there is only one manuscript that is ready to submit to publishers. That one went off to the Kids’ Book Review Unpublished Manuscript Award. When I hear the results, then this manuscript will be flying away to publishers.

Day 12: Provoke

Day 12: Provoke

It’s day 12 of the Mastering the Habits of Great Writers challenge. You can read today’s challenge here.

I’m not sure that my writing is all that provocative… I just like writing stories. I hope that my stories make people think.

Most of what I’ve been writing lately is aimed at kids. When I come up with an idea, I like to think about what stories and messages had been around when I was a kid, as well as books my kids tell me they want to read.

Day 10: Share

Day 10: Share

It’s Day 10 of the Mastering the Habits of Great Writers. You can read today’s challenge here.

For me, the best part of this challenge is it’s a habit I already have!

I often purchase and read books by my writer friends and promote them at any opportunity. I’ve been wondering about starting to put some reviews of the books I’m reading on this blog…

I met this challenge yesterday when I finished my Princess story ready to send off for a competition. I’m taking a few days break before I work on finishing the next piece.

Day 7: Start

Day 7: Start

It’s Day 7 of the Mastering the Habits of Great Writers challenge. The challenge for today is Start, specifically, Start Ugly. You can read the whole challenge here.

I suppose this is what I’ve been doing with the 12×12 in 2012 challenge. Each manuscript is a first draft, and most are incredibly ugly! A lot of work is required to bring them up to a publishable standard. I know that my Princess story is looking a lot better now than the very first draft that I posted on this blog as part of the Princess Parade Flash Fiction contest.

Day 6: Steal

Day 6: Steal

It’s Day 6 of the Mastering the Habits of Great Writers challenge. Today’s challenge is to steal! You can see the whole challenge here.

One thing I’ve been doing lately is reading a lot of Princess books to help with writing my Princess story. I’ve had a mixed response from people. Some have recommended books for me to read, while others have told me to stop reading them and just find my own voice.
