Chapter Book Challenge update – #ChaBooCha

Chapter Book Challenge 2013

It’s now the 11th of March and a third of the way through the Chapter Book Challenge, also known as ChaBooCha. I thought I’d do an update to let you know how it’s going.

March began with an idea for a story, one that was completely different than the one I had been planning! Initially, I thought I’d be working on my Jimmy James story, however I have since been working on something else. It’s the story of Sam and is (very) loosely based on my own experiences as a child. Countdown to #ChaBooCha

Chapter Book Challenge 2013

It’s that time of year again, only 2 more sleeps until the Chapter Book Challenge, also known as ChaBooCha. I have a story mapped out and I even started it at lunch today!

I read the start of it to the Monash Writers Group tonight and they seemed to enjoy it, which was great as this was the first time I’d read it out loud. I need to make some changes, however they will come with time. [Read more…]

At the beginning…

How to start the story…

Now that I know what I want the story to be like, I need to work out where it starts. As this is the first book, I was thinking that it could start before the first stop when he is first recruited into the good guys organisation, however I’m starting to think that this will give away too much unnecessary information.

As there will be three stops, the story could start at any of these three points, though the general consensus from the Chapter Book Challenge group seems to be that it should start before the first stop… [Read more…]

Good guys, bad guys…

Creating good guys, and bad guys

One of the suggestions my kids came up with was having some bad guys in the story, something last years book didn’t have. This is something that I’ve been working on. In order to have bad guys, I also needed some good guys. Jimmy James, my main character, is one of the good guys, so I needed to work out where he fit in the grand scheme of things, and then work out who the bad guys were going to be.

With this in mind, the whole structure of the story changed, as well as some of the things I wanted to do with it. [Read more…]

Designing a gadget – or two…

Asking kids to design gadgets?

Mr N has been bugging me to let him illustrate one of my stories. He’s not bad at art, some of the pieces he comes home with are stunning. I’ve framed some hand they are hanging in pride of place around the house, however I’m not sure he’s the right illustrator for my books…

I’m now at the stage where I need to describe some gadgets, ones that don’t exist. I’ve been trying to describe them, however they are not quite working for me. I know what I want the gadget to do, however I’m having issues explaining what it looks like. [Read more…]

Rewriting/Restarting Jimmy James

A birthday gift

If you didn’t know, I’ve joined the Chapter Book Challenge with the view of getting Jimmy James and his stories out of my head.

A few weeks ago, I started writing the first in the series of Jimmy James books – the one where he gets his socks. It sounded like JJ was a spoiled, sullen & whingy child and not very likable.

Last night, I was inspired. I have changed the birthday to his 10th and based him more closely on my own kids, excited about his birthday. I am also imagining my kids reading the story as, after all, they will be my audience.

I am much happier with how the story is starting and I’m proud to say that chapter 1 is done (at least the first draft). It is yet to undergo the “kid test” as my 10 year old is away this weekend. So he will read it tonight (I hope).

The plans for the other stories are also falling in to place.

It’s such a nice feeling having this book get out of my head and onto the page.
