Chapter a day challenge

I have so many partly written stories it’s not funny. I know that in order to reach my dreams, I need to get them written! Once they’re written, I need to get them edited and published! Every book I release, and every book I sell, will bring me a little bit closer to my goal of being a full time author.

I’ve decided to set myself a challenge. It’s a simple one – to write or edit a chapter every day.

Knowing my destination

Knowing where I’m heading

I have a few different pieces of writing on the go at the moment. The ones that have been most successful (read – the ones that have been finished) have been those where I know where I’m going.

For these stories, I will often start out with a beginning and an end in mind. I may not know how I will get to that ending, but I know where I’m going.

Changing routines

Changing my writing routine

I see so many articles going around writing groups about getting into a routine and write every day. The message from these articles is that this is how you are going to be a “real” writer.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the writer’s of these articles must lead quite a predicable life!

At the moment, I haven’t been able to write every day like I was planning to. For a while, I was beating myself up about it. I wasn’t having a lunch beak as I would be driving my kids to school. By the time evening came around, I was too tired to do anything. Getting up early to write also wasn’t the best plan for my general health and stress levels.

So I came up with a new routine.

Chapter Book Challenge – Wrap Up #ChaBooCha

Chapter Book Challenge 2017

I didn’t keep up with my update posts during the Chapter Book Challenge! I am pleased to announce that I completed the challenge!

Last Saturday, I spent a couple of hours in my favourite cafe and stayed there until I completed the final chapter.

It needs a read through, but I need to let it sit for a while before I do that…

Making writing a priority

Creating more time to write

I love writing, and reading. Last year, I joined the PopSugar Reading Challenge as a way to make reading a bigger part of my life, and to read a wider range of books. This year I’m working on making writing a priority.

The last couple of weeks, I’ve been thinking about this and working out the places I am the most productive. For some reason, that place is at a cafe, but it has to be one that’s not too noisy. I can write in other places too, however the cafe seems to be my preferred environment.

A-Z – Ideas

Where do ideas come from?

One of the most common questions I’m asked the young writer’s in the group I run at the library is: Where do ideas come from?

For me, they come from all sorts of places!

A-Z – Dreams

We all have dreams. One of my dreams is to be able to earn an income from my writing. Every book I write brings me one step closer to that dream.

I also come up with some great ideas for stories in my dreams – when I can remember them! Right now I’m writing two novels that came from dreams, and I have a few more ideas that I have written down to develop at a later date.

The dreams don’t usually give me the whole plot of the story, but they do give me a starting point.

My first ChaBooCha winner badge!

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you will already know that I enjoy a challenge to help me get my writing done!

There are many writing challenges out there. Regardless of what their focus is, the aim is to help you get words on the page and get your writing done. For some of us, this is what we need.

I know that I have a number of half finished manuscripts, challenges help to keep me focused to turn them into complete manuscripts.

A-Z – Advice

Where do you go for advice?

Where do you go for advice?

As I said in my last post, I have been looking for some prompts to help me keep the blogging happening! One of the author’s I follow on Twitter, Beth Stilborn, is using the alphabet as a prompt, and I thought I’d do the same.

I’m not aiming to blog every day, just more regularly than I had been before the Author Blog Challenge.

I hope you enjoy my A-Z posts.

Writing/Publishing takes time

Writing takes timeYesterday was Chronic Fatigue Awareness Day. The next book in my Green Oaks Primary School series touches on this illness and I was hoping to have it ready to launch this week… but it isn’t ready. I was also hoping to launch another one in the series last year, but it didn’t happen.

One big lesson I have learned lately is that writing and publishing a book takes time, and often takes longer than we all expect it will.

This may be different for everyone, but it is true for me.
