Chapter Book Challenge update – #ChaBooCha

Chapter Book Challenge 2013

It’s now the 11th of March and a third of the way through the Chapter Book Challenge, also known as ChaBooCha. I thought I’d do an update to let you know how it’s going.

March began with an idea for a story, one that was completely different than the one I had been planning! Initially, I thought I’d be working on my Jimmy James story, however I have since been working on something else. It’s the story of Sam and is (very) loosely based on my own experiences as a child. Reading out loud

Read out loud

This evening, I sat down to work on my first manuscript to get it ready for editing and submission. I printed it out to review as I find it a lot easier to edit with a pencil. It also helps me to have a change of scene, getting away from the computer screen, to give me a fresh perspective on the words in front of me. [Read more…]

Time for a 12×12 Blog Party!

Time for a blog party!

Wow, it’s December and month 12 of the 12×12 in 12 challenge. It’s time to PARTY! You may remember the blog party 6 months ago – if not, check out my post here – now it’s time to celebrate the end of this years challenge.

This past 6 months has been harder than the first 6 months, mostly due to my health, however I have still managed to write 12 picture book manuscripts this year!! Woo Hoo! Most of this is because there are some months where I wrote more than one manuscript. [Read more…]

Looking for action & adventure?

Looking for action & adventure?

I’m finding an interesting issue with writing kids chapter books. In many ways, I’m writing books with my boys in mind, which is one of the reasons they read my manuscripts as I’m writing them.

Some people are suggesting that my stories need to be more exciting, have more action and adventure in them – good guys and bad guys, things like that. Many of the ideas I’ve come up with are simply gentle stories, there is not a lot of excitement in them, however my kids seem to be enjoying them. [Read more…]

Goblin in my head…

A goblin in my head

A while ago, I wrote a post about writing and depression. This was a hard post to write, but one that got a lot of comments.

A few days ago, I was talking with my kids about depression. They know that I’ve been diagnosed with it, and their comment was “But Mummy, you’re not sad all the time.” This led to a discussion about depression and what I experience. [Read more…]

Need some initials…

Need some initials

Maybe I’m getting my mojo back a bit, a good sign that things are getting better. I have an idea for a picture book for 12×12 in 2012, but I need some help.

I’m looking for some common initials, along the lines of CSI and FBI.

Ideally, they would have a T or D in them, and fairly common.

I’ve drawn a blank and need some help with this one…

All help is much appreciated. Please add a comment with your suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

What happens to teeth?

Where to teeth go?

My kids have lost their teeth. Their teeth fall out and they can’t find them to put them in a glass for the tooth fairy. Many a letter has been written to explain to the tooth fairy what has happened in the hope they will still get money for their tooth.

Thankfully, our tooth fairy, while being forgetful, still manages to find the teeth to give the kids money for their teeth.

Currently, I’m working on my next manuscript for the 12×12 in 2012 challenge about lost teeth and thought I’d put it out there for your help.

Some more gadget names…

More names needed, please help!

Back in January, I posted asking for some gadget names. There are some great suggestions there.

I’m revisiting My Mummy is Evil and I have a question, and need some more gadget names…

As part of rewriting the story, I’m changing a few things and adding in some more gadgets. Part of this is because my boys love reading about weird gadgets. I think it is something boys will enjoy. Here’s my question: Do your kids like reading about weird gadgets too? Or is it just my boys?

Sent off my competition entry…

Superhero is flying away…

Deep breath. Butterflies activated…

This morning I sent off my entry to the Kids’ Book Review Unpublished Manuscript Awards.

I’m a bit nervous about this. I entered last year, and didn’t win. I now know that my manuscript wasn’t ready… this year, I’ve sent off My Princess Wears a Superman Cape. It’s been edited and polished and is a much stronger story than it was when I first wrote it – and I think I may even be in with a chance.

Day 6: Steal

Day 6: Steal

It’s Day 6 of the Mastering the Habits of Great Writers challenge. Today’s challenge is to steal! You can see the whole challenge here.

One thing I’ve been doing lately is reading a lot of Princess books to help with writing my Princess story. I’ve had a mixed response from people. Some have recommended books for me to read, while others have told me to stop reading them and just find my own voice.
