Give a kid (or a library) a book

Give a kid a book to read

If you’ve been looking at my crowdfunding campaign, you’ll see that there are options to get a book for yourself and a book for a friend. In the notes I say that if you don’t have someone to give the book to, I’ll be happy to donate it to a school or library. I have also suggested to a few friends, mostly those without children, that if they want to support my campaign but don’t want a copy of the book, I’ll be happy to donate that book too. The current tally of books to be donated is 6, and I would love this to grow. [Read more…]

Kids involvement in Swallow Me, NOW!

Kids have helped along the way

I first wrote Swallow Me, NOW! during the Chapter Book Challenge in 2013 and kids have been involved in the story every step of the way.

During the challenge itself, I spent my evenings writing. My goal was to write a chapter a day until the story was finished. Every morning my kids would wake up and ask me what I had written the night before. They also wanted to read what I’d written. They were great at correcting any typo’s and spelling errors as well as suggesting ideas for the next chapter of the story. [Read more…]

I just wanted to take some time to say a huge Thank You to everyone who has supported the crowdfunding campaign for Swallow Me, NOW! so far. At the time of writing this post, we’re a bit over the $900 mark.

In other news… Teapot Tales 2 is now available

Teapot Tales 2 – now available

I know most of my posts lately have been to do with Swallow Me, NOW! and my crowdfunding campaign. That is not the only thing that’s been going on lately.

If you’re new to reading my blog, about this time last year, I had my first stories published in an anthology called Teapot Tales: A Collection of Unique Fairy Tales. As you can see, I was a little bit excited. Since then, I’ve had stories published in two more anthologies, and you can see all the details here. [Read more…]

Creating characters with book week in mind – #ChaBooCha

Characters with costumes in mind

A couple of days ago, I saw a Facebook post from one of my friends looking for easy ideas for a book week costume that was quick an easy with a hair style that her father could do.

This got me thinking about the characters we create for our books, especially for those of us who are children’s authors, and with the next Chapter Book Challenge on the horizon.

For most schools, book week is a big deal with at least one day set aside for dress ups. Usually this involves the students and teachers coming to school dressed as their favourite characters from books. Some schools have competitions and prizes for various categories, although most schools have fun with dressing up. [Read more…]

Writers Reveal – The Story That Changed My Life

Stories that changed my life

It’s Writer’s Reveal time again. This month’s topic has been set by JC Wolfe.

To be honest, when I got this prompt, I was stuck. I wasn’t sure what to write as there have been so many stories in my life and there wasn’t one that immediately came to mind. [Read more…]

Most book lovers have a “To Be Read” pile consisting of books they’ve bought, been given as gifts, borrowed from the library, or picked up in other places. Even with eBooks, there are books piling up. There’s nothing wrong with a “To Be Read” pile, all it means is that we have more books than reading time. [Read more…]

Writers are readers… in this blog post, share the book, or books, you are reading right now.

Obviously, if you’re a children’s author, it may not be a good idea to share the latest erotic thriller you may be reading, however if there’s a book that would appeal to your readers, let them know about it. [Read more…]

Every year, my kids need to dress up for a school book week parade. They need to choose a character from one of their favourite books and dress up. Since my kids have stopped reading picture books, this task can be quite a challenge. [Read more…]

International Book Giving Day 2014 – #giveabook

Yesterday was International Book Giving Day. Yes, I know it was also Valentine’s Day, I but I prefer giving books.

Last year was the first year I got involved, giving books to my sons and my nephews. The boys enjoyed their books so much, that I decided to do the same this year.

Books for the boys
