A-Z – Dreams

We all have dreams. One of my dreams is to be able to earn an income from my writing. Every book I write brings me one step closer to that dream.

I also come up with some great ideas for stories in my dreams – when I can remember them! Right now I’m writing two novels that came from dreams, and I have a few more ideas that I have written down to develop at a later date.

The dreams don’t usually give me the whole plot of the story, but they do give me a starting point.

One dream gave me the vaguest of beginnings, but I decided to run with it. It’s shaping up to be a great story, and the hero is turning into a really nice guy! He wasn’t in the dream, but came while I was writing the story.

One dream gave me much more of the story, including the hero this time! It also set up a whole setting and even the ending, it was the middle that needed working on. That is coming as I write.

Not all dreams have the potential for a story, some do. I use them as any other writing prompt, essentially as something to kick start my writing. Sometimes they can be incredibly useful, almost serving up a near-complete story plan just waiting to get out of my head and onto the page.

Do you ever use your dreams as a writing prompt? How does it work for you?
