Day 6 – About that platform…

Working on my platform!

Working on my platform!

Day 6 prompt is:

As an author, your platform is your building block to an audience. It’s where you’re showing up on a regular basis, whom you’re influencing, who knows you, who’s following you, who’s talking about you, who’s waiting for that (next) book to come out. What are the three most important things you are presently doing to grow your platform? What are three new steps you will undertake in the first quarter of 2017 to shake things up a bit?

Platform is something I’m still working on. I’m on Facebook and Twitter, as well as having this blog and an author website. I also have an email newsletter that I rarely send to! I admit that I’m a bit ad hoc when it comes to posting there…

I’m finding that the children who read my books aren’t on any of these things, and they are starting to choose their own books, rather than relying on the books their parents are reading to them.

I also find it hard with the email newsletter. I’ve released two books in two years, it gets hard to know what to put in my newsletter when there’s nothing much to announce…

The places I’ve found I reach readers directly is doing markets! The kids walk past our stall, the covers catch their eyes, and they ask their parents to buy them.

Next year, I want to grow my newsletter, and send something out once a quarter. This will mean I need to start doing things so I have something to tell my subscribers. Given that I have less than 40 subscribers, I will also need to work on growing this number.

The second thing I want to do is to work on my author website. It’s been sadly neglected… it needs a new look and feel, as well as I want to add content regularly. This may also help with the newsletter as the content on the site could be used in the newsletter…

There is so much more that can be done, but I need to be realistic to make it fit in with writing, work, kids, and life in general.

  1. I guess the question we authors have to ask is, Can we do marketing on our own? I say we cannot and we need to partner up with folks who know what they are doing to get us the signings and reviews and radio shows, and social media presence. I hope Laura’s group can have a special workshop on this concept.
