Dreams to novels?

Dream to a novel...

Dream to a novel…

A few days ago, I had a dream. When I woke up, I thought “Wow, that would make a great novel”!

There were some really strange elements to the story, but the main arc of the dream has potential, with a bit of work. The main character was there, along with parts of her story.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had a dream like this. I have notebooks of ideas that have come from dreams. The good ones, the ones worth pursuing, often come up over multiple nights.

Some need some more research, some just need time for fleshing them out. Others need more mulling over to see where the story is likely to go. A few dreams are enough to kickstart the idea, but daydreaming is often needed to grow the story.

It’s funny how ideas can appear when you least expect them, and in a different genre to what you may normally write! If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know I mostly write for children… this is a whole new challenge.

One goal I have this year is to finish a draft of a novel for grown ups. It’s time to dust off some of these ideas and actually get at least one finished!

In case you’re wondering, the story I was working on before Christmas is still in progress. It’s stalled because I need to do some research. I’m planning a trip to the Immigration Museum next time I have a day to myself. I can’t wait. I’m sure they’ll be able to give me some ideas on how to continue this story.

I’m hoping to get a story started before the Chapter Book Challenge in March, as well get some editing completed as we’re getting closer to publishing another book in the Green Oaks Primary School series.
