ABC – Day 27 – Growing your platform

Building my Platform

Building my Platform

What are the three most important things you are doing to grow your platform?

A number of years ago, I started this blog. I didn’t have any books published. In fact, I didn’t even know what sorts of books I wanted to write. At this stage, I hadn’t even heard about author platforms back then. I had, however, been blogging for years and I knew how valuable it could be, as well as how fun. Regardless of how I’ve been going with my books, I have been posting on my blog. I have a small, but loyal following (according to my stats). This blog is the first important thing I’m doing to grow my platform.

Around the same time as starting this blog, I created a Facebook page. The main reason I started this page, rather than just using my profile, is that I share things about my kids on my profile and they are not relevant to my writing… mostly. I also found that I didn’t want to be kept up to date with the details of what everyone shared on their Facebook profiles! With the page, I share blog posts, as well other writing tips and quotes that may be relevant to other writers. The Facebook page is the second important thing I’m doing.

A bit over a year ago, I realised that this blog and its Facebook page are both aimed more at other writers than readers, so I created another website and Facebook page. These are aimed more at readers and I share things about my life as an author, promote my books and writing, rather than giving tips on writing. I suppose this is related to points one and two…

Through contacts I made in Facebook groups. I regularly contribute to a few other blogs, including Australasian Christian Writers, Christian Writers Downunder, and Just Write for Kids Australia. I also contribute to the Chapter Book Challenge blog each time the challenge runs. While all these blogs are aimed at fellow writers, they are helping with growing my platform and building my networks. This has brought in opportunities to sell books as well as sharing my expertise.speaking engagements. This would be the third important thing I’m doing to grow my platform.

There are also other things I am doing to grow my platform, but these are three important ones. These are also tasks that fit around children and work as I can schedule posts in advance so especially my blog can keep going if I take a break!

I’m looking forward to reading what some of the other challenge participants are doing to grow their platforms. Be sure to check out their blogs for some more ideas.

  1. Targeting fellow writers is a good idea… Beyond just building a network (which is very important), writers are also readers by nature. And they tend to love to talk about other writers. I think it’s a great place to start 🙂

  2. Being part of a writing community is always worthwhile.
