ABC – Day 25 – Book as a business

Book as a business

Book as a business

If your goal is to sell books, you must view your book as a business. In what ways do you treat your book as a business? Where could you improve? What resources could you leverage to improve your book business?

I have a huge long list of things I would like to do to improve my book as a business… the biggest thing I would like is time!

One thing I did a few months ago was to get some proper accounting software so that I could keep track of my income and expenses. It’s still a work in progress as I have a lot of transactions to add, but it’s getting there. At least I’m getting my invoicing done quickly!

I have an email list that is very small but growing. I haven’t sent out anything in a while, mostly because I haven’t had any news to tell people. I read somewhere that one thing to do would be to send out a piece of flash fiction that is exclusive to my email list – this is something I’m looking at doing soon.

I would love to have a virtual assistant who can take care of making sure orders are shipped, look after my calendar, sending a regular email newsletter and things like that, but that is in my five year plan. I also have plans to sell books at markets, when I have a few more to sell. There are quite a few in my area who would welcome a children’s author as a trader. I am doing the research to set a foundation for the future.

Right now, my books are a part time business as my day job is what puts a roof over our heads. Sales are coming slowly and steadily, and I’m happy with that. In one of my previous posts in this challenge, I said I was in it for the long haul, and that’s what I’m doing.
