ABC – Day 20 – Publishing Format

Did you publish your book as a traditionally printed book, an eBook, an audiobook, or all three? How did you come to your decision? Which company(ies) did you use for printing, formatting, recording, editing, and distribution? How did you select them?

For Swallow Me, NOW!, I self published as both an eBook and a printed book. I would love an audiobook too, but I don’t have the finances just yet.

This book is aimed at primary school children, and most of them don’t have devices they can easily read books on. If they do have iPads, they use them more to play games than read books. With this in mind, it was important to have a printed copy of the book.

I also want to get the book into schools and have it used in the classroom when teachers are talking about bullying. For this, a print copy is important as not all primary schools have the facilities for all the students to read eBooks.

The other reason for having a printed book was quite selfish – I wanted to be able to sign a copy and have it sitting on my bookshelf at home!

While most kids don’t have e-readers, there are some that do. An eBook copy is also useful for giving to reviewers and using as prizes in draws as I don’t have to pay for postage! To date, I have sold more printed copies than eBook copies.

For editing and formatting, I chose to work with Julieann Wallace from Lilly Pilly Publishing. We met online through one of the writer’s Facebook groups we’re both members of and I liked what she did. I also spoke with some of the other authors she had worked with. One of the things that attracted me was the fact that Julieann is a former school teacher. As this book is set in a school and is aimed at school students, I knew she would look at it with a teacher’s eye.

Julieann was able to edit and format my book as well as load it up for print on demand printing and distribution with Lightning Source. I spoke with a friend who is a librarian, and she told me about the ordering process they use and Lightning Source has a relationship with the distributor the library uses, so it was an obvious choice as I want to get the book into libraries.

I am also able to order copies of books that I can sell myself through my website and to friends.

Right now, I’m working on two more books for publishing with Lilly Pilly Publishing.

If you want to read Swallow Me, NOW!, it’s free this weekend on Kindle to celebrate my birthday (October 3) and the first anniversary of publication. Click here to get your copy.

It seems that I’m not getting all your responses… or, am I mistaken?! Have a wonderful birthday … and may this next year bring those two books to fruition!

    • Thanks Amy. I have been getting your comments, I haven’t been able to reply to all of them just yet… maybe that’s why? Or have you ticked the “notify me of new posts by email” box?
