ABC – Day 16 – Challenges

Challenges along the way

Challenges along the way

What has been the most challenging part of your book process: writing, building the book, printing, distributing, marketing, etc.? What do you wish you’d known before you began?

In every aspect of my book process, the biggest issues is time!

When writing my first draft, it’s easy to get distracted with all the other things that make up life – work, housework, kids, and so on. This is why I love doing challenges so much. They give me a deadline to work towards and that makes it easier to prioritise writing in my day.

I find editing a challenge. I must admit to get bored part way through as I’ve already read this story a number of times… Again, having a deadline here helps to get things done, but even then it can be a challenge.

Time is also an issue when it comes to marketing and promotion. I have a list of things I would like to do, but haven’t yet. I’m slowly going through the list, one step at a time, and it’s getting there, though not quite as fast as I’d like it to.

My reality is that I need my day job in order to keep a roof over our heads. I have two gorgeous boys aged 11 and 13 who need their mum to be present, especially as they both have some health issues at the moment. These things currently take priority over my books…. but I’m in it for the long haul. I joke that my books are my retirement income. Given that I’ve still got about 30 years before I’m 65, I have time to build up my catalogue of books, the readers, fans and marketing.

One thing I did know before I started is there is no ideal time to begin, so don’t wait for that time, just get started.

  1. Time, that’s the challenge. Glad to know you’re “in it for the long haul.” That’s the thing about writing. If we keep plugging along, our “stable” of books grows and so does our fan base. Great article!
