ABC – Day 7 – Writers Block

Overcoming Writer's Block

Overcoming Writer’s Block

Do you ever experience writer’s block? What do you recommend to help overcome writer’s block? Any foolproof tricks that always work for you?

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you will know that I do experience writer’s block. I have blogged about it here, and here.

Over the last few years, I’ve learned that writer’s block seems to happen most when I’m exhausted and overwhelmed. Where possible, I try to take a break from writing completely, and then find a challenge or a story to get my teeth into when things settle down.

If taking a break isn’t an option, then some of the things I try include:

  • Working on something else for a while, sometimes this can help the ideas come running
  • Reviewing what I’ve already written as this can sometimes jog things to keep going
  • Write rubbish deliberately – sometimes this can turn out to being something good
  • Do some exercise, such as a walk around the block, to get the blood flowing
  • Have a shower, I’ve nicknamed it the “Magic Shower” as this helps to get the ideas flowing again, I just have to be prepared to write any ideas down right away!
  • Write a blog post, it’s still writing, even if it isn’t what I really want to work on. Sometimes the post is about the fact I have writer’s block

Sometimes these work, sometimes they don’t, but I keep going. I also try to remember that this shall pass and it doesn’t mean I’m a bad writer or that I am kidding myself that I can write at all. Almost all writer’s I’ve met have experienced writer’s block at some stage in their career.

How do you overcome writer’s block?
