ABC – Day 2 – Earliest memories of writing

Earliest memories of writing

Earliest memories of writing

When did you begin writing? Describe your earliest memory of writing. Are you formally trained, or did your writing begin as a hobby? How did your writing habit/process/career develop?

I have been writing for as long as I can remember. My mum still has books and stories I wrote when I was in primary school! I have a folder of writing from high school. Some of it is pretty good and has a lot of potential to edit further or even turn into a novel.

For a long time, I hadn’t considered doing anything with my writing. I just knew that I enjoyed it and always got good marks in English. Then I had to start choosing subjects for VCE (year 11 and 12) and look at careers. Creative writing wasn’t considered acceptable, so I studied journalism for a while and left creative writing behind.

I started my own business in 2002 and started writing articles for that, and then I discovered blogging around 2006. This was all part of my business and was a great way to get my site noticed by search engines. I also enjoyed using it as a way to share my knowledge of small business.

When my business closed about 4 years ago, I picked up my creative writing pen once more and have gone on to have my first chapter book published last year. I have continued blogging as well as writing stories and hope to make it a full time career one day.

  1. Hi Melissa,
Great start! It takes discipline to have a business writing articles. Good for you. Did you write on demand? A few of my friends did that. I left teaching in 2012 and started being a ghostwriter with a book (took me a year to finish it but I love the way it turned out) and then I wrote my first book on coping with vision loss. On October 4, it will be the first anniversary of my book! So exciting!
Looking forward to learning more about your goals.
    Amy

    • I did some writing on demand, but not much. Most of it was all for my own business…
October 3 is the anniversary of my book 🙂 Seems like a good time to publish a book 😉

  2. Suggestion: make a habit, when writing about your published book, include the book’s name and an automatic order link. (I’m working on the automatic link part, too)

Good to read you again, Melissa!

    • Thanks Beth. Sometimes I think people get a bit sick of hearing the name of my book… great tip, I will remember it. I’ve got a way to go to get used to blowing my own horn 🙂

  3. It seems so many of us have been writing for as long as we can remember.
