Friday Five – Using a virtual assistant

I don’t know about you, but there are a lot of tasks I would love to hand over to someone else. Not the writing side, but more the business side of being an author.

When I ran my own business, I used virtual assistants quite a bit to do tasks I didn’t have time to do, and I dream of the day when I can make use of them once more. A virtual assistant (or VA) is a bit like a right hand man, someone who can do the jobs you don’t have time to do, or simply don’t want to do.

Here are five tasks a virtual assistant can help you in your business of being an author:

  1. Manage your calendar – there are a lot of online tools that can help with managing your calendar. A VA can help to manage your calendar by booking in speaking engagements, interviews, and other events you need to be available for.
  2. Bookkeeping – it’s important to keep up to date with your financial records. If finances isn’t something you enjoy, then employing a VA to look after your books can be a great investment.
  3. Sending out books – these could include your Legal Deposit copies, promotional books to reviewers, books that have been sold through your website, or sending any other books that need sending out. Part of this could be keeping an eye on your stock levels. If you require a VA to store your books too, there may be a storage fee involved too.
  4. Updating your website – a VA can keep your author site current by adding new books, event dates, and any other details you want to add. They could also update your blog with posts you’ve written in a word processor or even by hand.
  5. Email newsletters – if you have an email newsletter, a VA can produce and send your newsletter to your subscribers. You simply need to provide them with the content, though there are some VAs who can write content for you too.

There are other tasks a VA can help you with. Think about some of the tasks you need to get done and whether or not you actually have to do them yourself.

If you had a VA to help you, what tasks would you like them to do?
