Writing a novel?

Writing a novel?

I’ve had an idea for a while to write a novel. The idea came from a piece of flash fiction I wrote a while ago called Dust Jackets for Gowns, you can read it on Word Warbler on Facebook here. Many of the comments want to know what happens next.

I’m used to writing shorter novels. Swallow Me, NOW! is around 14,000 words. Most novels are closer to 50,000 words. I’m not sure how I’ll go writing something that long… I’ve been wondering about turning this into a novella instead. I’ve had some great tips from members of some of the writing groups I’m a member of.

My next step is to decide what happens next. There are at least two ways I can go with this story, and there may be a way to weave them both together, but I’ll have to do some planning. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you will know that my plans are usually quite vague with a beginning, an ending, and a rough idea of how to get there. For something longer than a kids chapter book, I have a feeling I’ll need to do a bit more planning than usual.

This has the potential to be a fun story and I have some vague ideas of what could happen. I’m busily keeping a notebook to see what ideas are useful and what aren’t. I also think I need to visit some bridal shops to see more about how they are laid out, the types of fabric of dresses, and so on. There are also a lot of great images on Pinterest, I’ve started a board to keep track of them.

In between other projects, I hope to get the research done and ideas down on paper to start writing later in the year. I’m even toying with the idea of giving NaNoWriMo another try, this time with a story that has been fully thought out.
