Friday Five – Look after yourself

I posted a few days ago about remembering to look after yourself. I don’t know how many of you fit writing around other activities, such as day jobs, kids, family commitments, and so on, but I do.

I find there are times when looking after myself gets lower on the priority list. These are times when I am likely to fall in a heap and no writing happens as that also gets lower on the priority list.

Here are five ways you can look after yourself and keep going:

  1. Eat regularly – I don’t mean snacking on junk food either. When life gets busy, I often forget to eat breakfast or take a lunch break, instead reaching for the nearest snack food or simply going without. Look after yourself by eating regularly with healthy food.
  2. Take a break – when life gets busy, it can be hard to take some time out. A break could be as short as a five minute break while you make a cuppa or going for a short walk around the block. Taking a break can also help clear your head so you’re ready for the next task/chapter.
  3. Exercise – When life gets busy, exercise goes out the window. It can be hard to find time to go to the gym or a long bike ride. Try and find the time to keep exercising, even if it’s a short walk around the block or dancing to crazy music with your kids for a short time. There are a lot of small things you can do to keep moving that won’t take up too much time.
  4. Get some sleep – It can be tempting to stay up half the night and write or edit your latest manuscript, and then get up early the next morning. This isn’t a good habit to get in to… To look after yourself, make sure you get enough sleep. I set myself a bedtime as I know my kids get up early.
  5. Sit properly – my physio has been educating me on this point lately. I have a sore neck and shoulders, partly caused by bad posture. Where possible, sit up straight and have your computer in the correct ergonomic position. Do a Google search to find out what this is. This may not always be possible, but do your best.

Do you have some tips you can add to this list? How do you take care of yourself so you can keep writing and do everything else you need to do?
