Creating a mobile book shop

Create a Mobile BookshopThere have been a few times lately where I’ve found myself without any books on hand. This has meant lost sales as the people I was talking to may have forgotten all about me when they went home (though they may have looked me up on Amazon).

For a while, I’ve been meaning to create a mobile book shop so I can easily have books in the car at all times. I used to have a crate with books in it, but it wasn’t particularly sturdy.

Yesterday, I bought a tub with a lid. The lid is important as it means I can still put things on top of the box without it wrecking the books, or having the books mixed in with shopping, school bags, and any other junk we have in the boot of the car. The tub is big enough to hold quite a few books in two piles as it’s wide enough for the length of a book with two books side by side.

I also purchased a cheap pencil case. This is to hold cash. I have put a minimal amount of change in there so that I’m prepared. The pencil case is opaque so that it’s not easily obvious what is inside. It space to add a name, but I haven’t decided what to call the pencil case yet…

Along with books, I have included bookmarks, a pen, and a receipt book. I do have an accounting app on my phone and iPad, but there are still times when a receipt book comes in handy. This is one I got years ago from the newsagent. One afternoon I sat down and wrote my ABN on a number of pages…. next time I’ll get stickers printed.

My mobile book shop holds everything I need if I get unexpected book sales while waiting for kids at their after school activities, or anything else we may be doing.

The tub is now packed and in the boot of my car. Driving around today, I didn’t notice it moving around, but if it does, I’ll come up with some way to hold it in place.

The whole set up cost me around $15, a small price to pay to be prepared for book sales at any time.

Edited to add:

Following on from enquiries, I wanted to add that the purpose for this box is to have books in the car at all times. The box doesn’t have wheels on the bottom so it won’t roll around in the boot as much as a box with wheels. As I won’t be taking it in and out of the car, I’m not too worried about it being heavy. When the time comes to take books to markets and expos, I will look for another solution for that.
