When my kids were younger, I used to run my own business. Part of that business was an information website, a magazine, and an annual conference. I can remember speaking to one of my clients about writing an article for me. She responded “But I’m just starting out, I don’t know anything.”

During the discussion that followed, we found that she knew a lot about starting a business and the products she was selling. A couple of weeks later, she sent me an article.

Writing guest blog posts and taking advantage of speaking opportunities can help you establish an author platform, something that we are all told we should have. Being featured on blogs can also help with search engines and people finding your author website.

If you are just starting out in your writing journey, you may think you have nothing to share about writing and publishing, so you let opportunities to submit guest blog posts (such as for my Friday Five), or speak about writing, slide by.

Here are some ideas on areas you may be an expert on:

  • Writing, and completing a first draft
  • Researching for your book
  • The topic you have been researching
  • Editing your manuscript
  • Preparing a manuscript for submission to publishers
  • Writing cover letters to publishers
  • Handling rejection
  • Finding time to write and edit your manuscript
  • Tips on writing that you have picked up from writing, attending workshops, networking

Other things you can share include:

  • Tools that you use to write and edit
  • Some of your favourite books and resources
  • Places you like to read or write

These are just a few ideas to help you get started. Can you add anything to this list?
