Dinner for One with a Notebook

Dinner, glass of wine, and a notebook

Over the last couple of months, I haven’t been doing a whole lot of writing. I’ve been concentrating on editing, crowdfunding, looking after kids, work, and all the other things that come with being a busy Mum. I haven’t participated in my usual writing prompts and challenges and barely finished a story for this months Chapter Book Challenge.

If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen the photo that’s on this post. There’s a story behind this picture, in short, it’s close to my ideal Friday  night.

During the football season, my kids had been going to their Dad’s place after the football match on Saturday morning, this was my first child free Friday night for some months and I wanted to do something different. I headed out to find some dinner, armed with a notebook, thinking I’d find some quiet cafe and sit and just write.

I was going to write for no other purpose than to just put pen to paper. I wasn’t going to work on a chapter book or particular project, just write and see what happens. Something I haven’t done for a while. Some words had been swirling in my head from the time I had dropped my kids off with their dad and I was looking forward to writing them all down.

I also had a clear idea of what I wanted for dinner.

After browsing the menus posted outside various eating places, I finally spotted what I was looking for and went in. Initially I was disappointed that it was one of the busier restaurants in the area, but I went in and sat down anyway. I need not have worried.

I spent the next hour or so enjoying a delicious dinner and glass of wine – and I wrote two stories!

The noise of the restaurant may have helped drown out the extra thoughts in my heads to allow me to focus on getting the stories down, or maybe it was just the change in scenery, or maybe something else entirely. All I know for sure is that it was a wonderful way to spend a Friday night, and I’m happy to have written down some more stories.

  1. I love your title! I, too, have had trouble finding time to write, so I will try to get out of the house with my notebook and just myself.
