Blog Post #18 – Costumes and dress ups

Costumes & Dress Ups

Welcome to the blog post prompt for this week. If you’re blogging along this week, or coming back another time to join in, please add your link in the comments so we can check out your blog too. If you add a link, please visit one or two of the other links and add a comment.

Every year, my kids need to dress up for a school book week parade. They need to choose a character from one of their favourite books and dress up. Since my kids have stopped reading picture books, this task can be quite a challenge.

It’s not only children that like to dress up as their favourite characters, adults like to dress up too.

Whether or not you write picture books, create a blog post or two with tips on how people can dress up as your characters. This could include more information about the sorts of clothes your characters may wear that isn’t included in your book. For example, if you mention in your book that your character likes to wear jeans and a flannelette shirt, your blog post could go in to more detail about the colours or style of shirt.

You could include details on how readers can create costumes quickly and cheaply using items they may already have around the house. Such as wearing an oversize shirt or t-shirt tied with a string or belt to create a tunic for a child.

To encourage your readers to get involved, you can invite them to submit their photographs and tips on how they’ve created the costumes.

Where possible, schedule them around book week as that is the key time that people will be looking for costume and dress up ideas.

If you are using this prompt on your blog, add your link in the comments. I look forward to reading your tips on creating costumes for your characters.
