Friday Five – Give an Author a Christmas Gift

Give a gift to an author

Christmas is nearly here again. I don’t know about you, but this is a busy time for our family. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ll know that both of my kids are bookworms and they have their favourite books and authors.

Did you know you can give your favourite authors a Christmas gift this year? Here are five simple things you can do for your favourite author this Christmas.

  1. Give their book as a gift – one of the best things you can do is to buy a book to give as a gift. This can introduce your favourite author to a new reader as well as increase sales, always welcome at any time of the year.
  2. Tell people about them – this could be a book recommendation via GoodReads, a blog post, a shout out on Facebook, or any number of things. It could be as simple as recommending a book when people are asking for gift ideas for someone. The more people know about an author, the more readers the author may attract.
  3. Write a review – this is something I’m guilty of – I read a book and forget to add a review on GoodReads or Amazon, or wherever. Take a few moments to write a review of a book by one of your favourite authors.
  4. Buy a book for yourself – have you been wanting the latest release by your favourite author, or maybe a book from their list that you haven’t read yet? Buy a copy for yourself and wrap it under the Christmas tree. Not only will your favourite author appreciate the sales, but it’s a great excuse to buy another book.
  5. Send a Christmas Card – it may not be something most of us think about, but a card with a short message about how much you have enjoyed their book or books this year.

Simple things can give your author a warm fuzzy feeling at Christmas. If you’re looking for just one idea, I recommend going with point 1. After all, if it’s a book you want to read too, you can always borrow the book after Christmas when the recipient has read it.
