Friday Five – Flash Fiction for book preview & bonus

Flash fiction for book marketing

If you’ve been reading this blog in the last little while, you will know that I’ve been writing flash fiction lately and have had eight stories published in three anthologies.

I’ve also been thinking quite a bit about marketing fiction, including longer books such as chapter books and novels. Did you know that flash fiction can help you with our story? Here are pieces of flash fiction you can write about your story.

  1. Deleted scenes – all authors know that scenes get cut in the editing process. Rewrite these scenes as flash fiction.
  2. Back story – there is always back story that doesn’t fit in the book. This could either be deleted scenes or written so you know what happened before the story started.
  3. Another point of view – to mix it up, write a scene from the point of view of another character. This could be a fun exercise to help develop the story, or just for the fun of it.
  4. About a place – choose a place in your story and write a piece of flash fiction about it. It could fit in your novel somewhere or just be a piece to add more information about the place.
  5. About a thing – there may be an object in your story that has some significance. Write some flash fiction about this object. This can help you develop some background about this object.

These pieces could simply be fun exercises to help you with your story, or they could be used as teasers for your story to entice people to read your novel or as a bonus for your fans to download from your website. If they fit, you could also submit them to anthologies and use them as promotion for your novel.
