November Challenge – Week 1… #NaNonFiWriMo

Fantastic Fillers – progress update

It’s the 7th of November, and this means that week 1 of Write Nonfiction in November has come to an end. So far, I’m finding it a lot easier than expected.

Why? A few different reasons:

  • Prepared – Fantastic Fillers is something I have been working on all year. I started blogging this book back in February, so I had a lot of information that just needed to be pulled into line.
  • Writing Sprints – even though most of the people in my writers groups are doing NaNoWriMo, but in the writing sprints, it doesn’t matter. Someone calls “go” and we just write for half an hour. Writing in a half hour sprint means I’m staying focused and actually getting the book written.
  • Support – not only do I have the support of an amazing group of writers in various groups around Facebook, I also have an amazing editor who I can touch base with and contact when I have questions or need someone to bounce ideas off.

One interesting thing that has come about is my original plan for the book isn’t quite working. When I was pulling everything together, I found that there was a lot of repetition, so we worked to change the book plan. I’m looking forward to the kids going to bed so that I can start writing.

To inspire me, I got out my box of fillers and I currently have fillers spread all over my lounge room floor!

After a Skype call today with my editor, we also have a timeline for launching the book! Scary stuff, but also really exciting. The first goal in the timeline is to get the draft done – and that is for this challenge.

When I’m in the market for some fiction, I’ve been playing around with an idea for a novel based on a flash fiction piece I wrote last month called “Dust Jackets for Gowns“. I’m not going to write this novel in November, I’m not that crazy, but it’s fun to give my brain a bit of a change.
