Do I have to have a blog?

Do I have to have a blog?

Obviously, I have a blog. I actually have more than one. At writers group a while ago, as well as talking to some friends who are writers, the question about having a blog comes up. It’s generally along the lines of “Do I have to have a blog?”

My answer is a big “No”. I don’t think that writers have to have a blog, although I do think it’s an advantage to have a website.

There are some good things about having a blog. This includes it being easy to update information often, and search engine’s like them. The main downside about having a blog is that it can be time consuming to keep up to date.

Most of the information I see about authors and blogging seems to be aimed at non-fiction authors, rather than those who write fiction or children’s books. As a fiction writer, it can be harder to find topics to blog about, but it’s not impossible.

The audience for your blog is something important to consider. From what I have seen so far, most of the people who read this blog are other writers. I share writing tips and other steps on my writing journey.

My amazing web gal is setting up a new site for me at www.melissagijsbers.com which will be aimed more at readers or, in the case of kids books, the parents of readers. I’m still trying to work out what I will include on the blog over there. If anyone is interested, I can share some of the thoughts I’m having about what to include on my author site.

In short, as an author, I think having a web presence is important, if nothing else than to list books you’ve written, however I don’t think that all authors need to have a blog.
