Fun with Flash Fiction

Writing flash fiction

This weekend, I’ve been absolutely exhausted, but I’ve wanted to write. My brain has been working overtime and my fingers have been itching to get the words down. Instead of working on one of my current projects, I’ve been having fun with some flash fiction.

If you haven’t heard about it before, Flash Fiction is a short short story, generally around 500-1000 words or so. You can read more about Flash Fiction here.

I dug out some writing prompts from various online sites and wrote a few pieces. One has the potential to be a novel, and the others were just fun to write. By taking the pressure off self-imposed deadlines of trying to get my current stories finished, I was able to write for the joy of it.

Writing these flash fiction pieces was a lot of fun and I want to write more. Having the writing prompts gave me a great start for each piece. I didn’t write every prompt I could find, just ones that I thought I could do. That’s one of the great things about writing prompts – there are a lot out there, so you ‘re sure to find ones that will suit the style and genre you write. There are also a lot that can help move you out of your comfort zone to try something new, though with how tired I was last night, I stuck with ones that were in my comfort zone.

I’m still on the hunt for some flash fiction and am open to suggestions. If you have a favourite website for writing prompts or have a prompt you want to suggest, please add a comment and let me know. I look forward to seeing what comes up & what stories they kick off.
