Overcoming Writers Block

Writer’s Block tips

In a few of the writer’s groups I’m part of, there has been quite a bit of discussion about writer’s block. There are some people who say this is a myth, however any writer will tell you at some time or another that they struggle to write. It could be a complete block to write anything or just a block on the piece they are writing.

I know that there are times when I struggle to write anything, and other times when it’s just on that piece that I’m writing.

Here are some of the ways I overcome writer’s block.

If I struggle to write anything at all, it’s usually because I’m worn out. If this is the case, I:

  • have a good nights sleep
  • relax and look after myself for a bit
  • take a break

If these don’t work, then I simply write something, anything. It could be a blog post, a shopping list, some rubbish that comes out of my head. It could be anything. It also helps if I change my writing medium – such as going to a pen and paper, a different computer, the ipad, or even using chalk on the footpath outside (but only if I’m really desperate!).

If I’m struggling with a particular story, it could be because I’ve hit a roadblock in the storyline. If this is the case, I:

  • work on something else
  • write a blog post
  • do some research to help move the block
  • take a break, or a shower
  • go back to my notes or the original plan for the story

There are other things I do too, but these are the things that come to mind when writing this post.

If you are a writer, what are some of your strategies for overcoming writer’s block?
