Learning at writer’s group

Writers Group fun

We’ve just got home from a fantastic night at the Monash Writers Group (hi to any members of the group stopping by). Tonight we split up into groups – one looking at script writing and the other looking at memoir. I was in the latter group.

One thing that I have wanted to do for a long time is to share my journey with post and ante natal depression. There are so many insights that come with hind sight that I think it may be useful to other women. I have picked up some great tips to get started.

Unlike novels and picture books, there isn’t a formula to follow when writing a memoir. There are many different stories written in many different ways. The tip from tonight is to just write!

I’m going to bite the bullet and do it. One suggestion was to write a diary. Instead of that, I’m going to blog. This seems to be my default way of writing a diary, especially as I’ve been writing so long. I also figure this way I can share things as I remember them and put them in order later. I’ve set up a Facebook page for this a while ago and have registered a domain name. I’m just waiting for it to be set up.

During the discussions, there were other parts of my life that people found interesting. I need to spend some time going through old photos and letters to get more information, however it could be an interesting story too…

Too many ideas, too little time!

I had a wonderful time tonight and am now settling down to do some writing.
