Chapter Book Challenge update – #ChaBooCha

Chapter Book Challenge 2013

It’s now the 11th of March and a third of the way through the Chapter Book Challenge, also known as ChaBooCha. I thought I’d do an update to let you know how it’s going.

March began with an idea for a story, one that was completely different than the one I had been planning! Initially, I thought I’d be working on my Jimmy James story, however I have since been working on something else. It’s the story of Sam and is (very) loosely based on my own experiences as a child.

Most of the writing I have been doing on my lunch break at work, writing over 750 words each day over my salad roll. Through one of the other members of the Chapter Book Challenge, I discovered a site called 750words.com, and I’ve been using this to write my sections. It is helping me keep up with the word count as well as giving me a kick to write every day.

Each day is a new chapter, and each afternoon when I pick my kids up from school, they ask me where the next part is! They have been enjoying the story so far.

Another advantage of the 750words.com site is that I’m sticking to the one story. Looking at how it’s set up, it looks like there is space for one idea each time. To keep them all together, I want to stick to the one story instead of chopping and changing like I often do… this is helping me to finish this one story.

I know it needs a lot of work, but i’m happy to say that I have written six chapters and am about half way through the story. I also know how the story will end as I’ve written part of the ending and that’s not counted above. If I keep this up, I’ll have finished my first draft by this time next week!! Then I’ll need to get to editing.

There are a few things I want to change. These include:

  • making my character a bit younger
  • more descriptions on the weather, mannerisms, and physical descriptions of the characters
  • adding in some details for some projects and objects that I have put space savers in for
  • generally smoothing out the story

As this challenge is a first draft, it’s doing well. I might keep on using the 750words.com site, especially if I keep making the progress that I’ve been making this week! You never know, by the end of the challenge, I might have a first draft and a second draft written… we’ll see what happens.

  2. Well done, great to find a tool that helps you write. I am aiming for a chapter a day and about 1000 words. Just reached chapter nine tonight, so getting there. I love seeing your posts and look forward to reading the rest of the story – might email you mine when I’m done!
