Designing a gadget – or two…

Asking kids to design gadgets?

Mr N has been bugging me to let him illustrate one of my stories. He’s not bad at art, some of the pieces he comes home with are stunning. I’ve framed some hand they are hanging in pride of place around the house, however I’m not sure he’s the right illustrator for my books…

I’m now at the stage where I need to describe some gadgets, ones that don’t exist. I’ve been trying to describe them, however they are not quite working for me. I know what I want the gadget to do, however I’m having issues explaining what it looks like.

Maybe this is a task for Mr N? I’m thinking I can explain to him what I want the gadget to do and let him run with coming up with a design for me. This could be an interesting exercise and could either be hugely successful or a complete disaster… that said, so far in this particular story both Mr N and Mr Z have been extremely helpful with brainstorming aspects of the story line, including some crucial plot points.

This might be something fun for the boys to do on Monday, a public holiday here in Australia. I say boys because once Mr N starts doing this, Mr Z will probably want to join in. I could take ideas from both their designs…

Whatever the boys come up with, this will be something to file away for the future when these books are published.
