Time for a 12×12 Blog Party!

Time for a blog party!

Wow, it’s December and month 12 of the 12×12 in 12 challenge. It’s time to PARTY! You may remember the blog party 6 months ago – if not, check out my post here – now it’s time to celebrate the end of this years challenge.

This past 6 months has been harder than the first 6 months, mostly due to my health, however I have still managed to write 12 picture book manuscripts this year!! Woo Hoo! Most of this is because there are some months where I wrote more than one manuscript.

It has been a huge challenge and a learning curve for me. I have also learned a lot. My wonderful boys are my biggest cheer leader, often waking in the morning and wanting to read what I wrote the night before. They are also telling me to hurry up and get published because they want copies of my books. These first drafts need a lot of work before they are at a publishable stage.

Some of the wonderful things that have come out of 12×12 in 12 include:

  • Writing 12 manuscripts! I never would have done this if it wasn’t for the challenge.
  • Meeting a wonderful group of writers through the 12×12 Facebook group. It’s wonderful how everyone is so supportive and encouraging of everyone else. There is no competitiveness between members (except when it comes to completing this months challenge) and everyone is happy when someone shares their success in getting published.
  • Getting one (or more) steps closer to my dream of being a published author.
  • Getting stories out of my head and onto the page. This is a BIG one. I keep coming up with story ideas and this challenge has got me writing them down.
  • Discovering a whole lot of new picture books and authors I hadn’t heard of before, as well as having a list of authors to keep an eye on.
  • Sharing this journey with my kids.
  • Rediscovering how much I enjoy writing for kids.

So, that’s it for 12×12 in 12 for this year. I can also head over to PlanBig and mark my plan a success.

Oh, and be sure to check out Julie’s post and the awesome music video she has made.

  2. What a great list of things to take away this year. Feels good to have 12 drafts! Congratulations Melissa. Enjoy your celebration 🙂

  3. Nice to meet you, Melissa! I loved the last line on your list “rediscovering how much I enjoy writing for kids.” As long as it’s enjoyable (at least most of the time) the long journey is one of discovery and excitement. Looking forward to 2013.

    • Thanks Wendy. It’s amazing how much nonsense you can write in a picture book that you can’t write in a story for adults.

  4. Congratulations on completing the challenge! What an amazing feeling. I know what you mean about sharing with your kids — it’s fun reading stories to them, having them listen, and knowing that YOU wrote it! All the best in 2013…

  5. I hope the next 6 months turn out to be best! And if you join again in 2013 I’ll be there to cheer you on!

  6. Congrats on finishing 12×12! You have a great list. #4 is something that I struggle with also. Challenges like 12×12 and PiBo have helped me too. Happy 2013!

  7. Melissa, I love how so much of your focus is on your kids. I think it’s an often overlooked benefit that while doing what we love, we model that life for our children too. Aren’t we lucky to have jobs that involve children so intimately? At the end of the day, THEY are who we are doing this for – the writing, 12 x 12, everything. Thanks for an inspiring post!

    • Thanks Julie. I love that I can get my kids involved too, and share my love of writing and stories with them. They have started writing too, and love it. Mr N wants to sign up for a creative writing class next year!

  8. This is such a great community Julie put together. I love that you mentioned sharing your “journey with your kids.” My kids know me by now. When they see me with a pen and notebook and me staring into space, they automatically say, ” looks like you need another story idea.” Congrats for completing 12 x.

    • Thanks Romelle. Recently my 10 year old has discovered writing and is doing well at school. He told someone that his Mummy is a writer and they commented that it must explain why he’s so good!

  9. Melissa, it has been so great getting to know you and becoming friends this year. Congratulations on writing all 12 drafts, and you are so blessed to have those kids who are eager to read your writing! My kids have started writing too; isn’t it great? (I’ll be running a writing contest for kids sometime in the early months of 2012, with prizes. So I’ll be sure to let you know about it when it starts.)

    • Thanks Becky. It’s been wonderful getting to know you too. I’ll definitely get the boys interested in your writing contest for kids – they love winning prizes!

  10. My kids are like yours…wanting me to hurry up and get my books published! Little do they know how long it takes! Congrats on all your accomplishments!

    • Thanks Tina. I’m also looking forward to getting published – I wish it wasn’t such a long process sometimes…

  11. Congrats on such a successful year. Kids are wonderful cheerleaders. My eldest is waiting with bated breath for my Mars book to get published. I wish publishers were as enthusiastic.

  12. BIG congrats on your 12 x 12 success! And I know exactly what you mean about getting those stories out of your head and on to paper. Now if we just didn’t have to revise ’em so much…;-)

  13. What a blessing your boys are…to you and your writing! So glad you completed the challenge. Looking forward to writing alongside you in 2013.
