Jimmy James at the AFL/VFL

Getting back to writing…

My kids have been bugging me this school holidays – they want me to hurry up and get my Jimmy James books published! I don’t know if this means they are bored and want something to read, or something else… but they promised that this afternoon they would go off and play and leave me to write. Too good an offer not to take up.

So, I’m sitting here with a cup of tea, lollies from my show bag and my laptop trying to get some work done.

I must admit that I’m struggling with editing the first book. I think the start needs to be tighter and the overall story needs to be longer, but I’m not quite sure how to go about it. I have sent an email to an editor/assessor recommended by a friend to see if she can help me.

Instead I have started on a new Jimmy James story, based on my own 10 year old who spends hours outside kicking around his football and pretending he is playing in an AFL match. Mr N has thought that I should write a football based story for Jimmy James, especially as he loves the Specky Magee books. Mr N has helped me with the commentary to start the story, and now comes the hard part.

I have been looking through the history of Australian Rules Football (something I thought I would never do) and am trying to find out where to send Jimmy James. One place could be the first ever VFL Grandfinal in 1898. One thing that concerns me is sending Jimmy James back to a similar point in time as the Magic Lanterns, though Mr N seems to think that would be OK, especially if this story is further on with a few other books written in between.

Another point in time could be how the World Wars impacted the then VFL… I think a call to the AFL history department is in order this week…

Oh well, enough of a blogging break, time to get back to it. If you have an idea of an Aussie Rules related event that kids may be interested in reading about, please let me know.
