Posting on blog… or not…

Sharing stories on a blog

One of the issues modern authors face is whether or not to share their work on their blog. Many traditional publishers don’t want to publish work that has been published elsewhere, even a snippet.

This is something I have been struggling with – especially with my Accidental WAHM stories. My ultimate goal has always been to publish the stories in books, however publishing the stories on the blog may not be the best path to getting published.

I have been trying to work out how to shape the stories and share the experiences of my characters as well as build the platform of readers and share some useful information with WAHMs.

Last night, I couldn’t sleep. Suddenly an idea hit me. I have a blog, so why not turn it into a collaborative blog between my characters? This way I can share their stories without publishing snippets of the novels I’m writing about them. They can share their journey and experiences and the things they’ve learned in their businesses and with their kids, and I can keep writing their stories to submit to publishers.

With this, my characters can share their journey through blog posts as I’m writing their stories in the background. They can share the things they’ve learned, their joys and frustrations.

This would all be fiction, but based on fact. There may be links to websites and resources to help other WAHMs as part of the posts, the characters may even respond to comments left on the blog.

This is still in idea stage and I would love to hear your thoughts on this concept. I am still trying to work out the best way to share these stories and not shoot myself in the foot as far as publishing goes.

You never know, the blog itself may be turned into a book by itself too…

  1. You can always self-publish. Nothing wrong with being an indie 🙂 However, if you want to go the traditional route, then just let the characters from your books blog on your blog. Keep their stories separate from their thoughts/comments. Just an idea. Good luck! WRITE ON!

  2. I think it a novel idea, interesting – I do agree with Jo that you should keep their stories separate from their thoughts and comments.

  3. I’m all for it!
In fact, I was thinking about doing something similar with the stuf f I’m working on.
It’s an adaptation of the Odyssey, and I was thinking about posting little informative pieces about the gods, humans, places, etc of the story, perhaps “interviews” of the heros, etc.
I’m in the process of re-designing my blog, but I’ll let you know when the stuff comes pouring in!

  4. I think it’s a great idea. My only worry would be if people were to steal my ideas/writing (because obviously it would be genius!) But I guess there are ways to safeguard that? Let me know how you go, I’d read it!
