Day 7: Start

Day 7: Start

It’s Day 7 of the Mastering the Habits of Great Writers challenge. The challenge for today is Start, specifically, Start Ugly. You can read the whole challenge here.

I suppose this is what I’ve been doing with the 12×12 in 2012 challenge. Each manuscript is a first draft, and most are incredibly ugly! A lot of work is required to bring them up to a publishable standard. I know that my Princess story is looking a lot better now than the very first draft that I posted on this blog as part of the Princess Parade Flash Fiction contest.

The good thing with these challenges is to just get something done, written, complete. The aim is to write a first draft, and these are ugly. There are some that I’ve sent to friends for their feedback, and others that are just sitting there, waiting for me to iron out the rough edges and pretty them up a bit more before sending them out. None are at the stage where they can be sent out to publishers, at least, not yet…

  1. I know what you mean about those first draft picture books. Mine are pretty ugly at the start too.
