12×12 in 2012 – Party Time!! Half way there

It’s party time!

Can you believe it – we’re half way through the 12×12 in 2012 challenge? I know I can’t.

To celebrate, Julie is hosting a blog party. Check out her post, it’s cool and full of daggy 80s songs, including our amazing new anthem. At the end of this post, I’ll link to my contribution for the music playlist, courtesy of suggestions from my kids.

Now, on to reminiscing…

I started this challenge with some trepidation. It had been a while since I’d written a a picture book, but it looked like fun, so I threw my hat in the ring.

My wonderfully cute boys (who are reading over my shoulder as I type) provided inspiration for a number of manuscripts, including “My Mummy is Evil” and “Decorating the Christmas Tree” (this one needs a better title). I entered and won a flash fiction competition with “My Princess Wears a Superman Cape” that is currently being turned into a picture book, and I’ve explored some deeper issues in a picture book about post natal depression.

Looking at my folder, I have quite a few manuscripts. Some need to be worked on, others need to be thrown out, but it’s been great to be writing again and challenging myself each month to come up with a new story.

The challenge group has been amazingly supportive. Lately life has meant I’m not posting as much as I would like, but even my sporadic participation doesn’t mean I’m ignored. Whenever I post a question, the amazing group members reply with some sage advice and encouragement when needed.

Another useful aspect has been the blog posts people have discovered and shared on many aspects of writing and publishing picture books. Things have changed quite a bit since I first starting writing Mikey’s Bedtime.

I’m looking forward to the next six months and the manuscripts that are yet to be written… for now, it’s time to PARTY!!

According to my kids, there is only one song to put in here… you’ll never guess what one of their favourite TV shows is…
