Prompt #4 – Reading impact writing?

Reading impacting writing?

The fourth prompt in the Author Blog Challenge is:

How do the things you read impact your writing? What do you love to read? What do you avoid reading at all costs? How would your writing change if you read more of the things you typically avoid?

I read all sorts of books, websites, articles and anything else I can get my hands on. I’m not sure how much this impacts on what I write.

With picture books, I have had to start reading some books for girls (about princesses) to help shape my own princess story by knowing what else is out there. I have two boys and we don’t have any books like that on the shelves here. In this way, the picture books I’ve read have had little impact on the books I write.

I do, however prefer to read “real life” type stories rather than science fiction or fantasy, and that is what I write. So, thinking about this, what I read may have an impact.

A while ago, I read a quote from someone that said to write the books you want to read. I keep this in mind with my writing. When I write something, I ask if I would want to read it. If it is, then I keep going. If not, then I discard it.

The more I think about it, what I read does have an impact my writing, more than I had realised before I started writing this post.
