What are kids scared of?

This snake isn't scary...

The story I wrote on Wednesday has passed the kid test – meaning I need to write more!

I’ve been doing a little bit of planning but I need some help.

What scares kids about snakes?

The idea behind this story is that Jimmy James talks to the snake and gets to know the facts about snakes, especially the areas he’s scared of.

Knowing specific things kids are scared of will help me know what things to include in this story.

All suggestions welcome.

  1. My DD knows some snakes are poisonous and some are not. Not knowing whether a snake is safe or not leads her to be scared/cautious of all snakes. Too much ‘Jack Hanna’ viewing I guess!

    • Thanks Cathy. That’s really helpful. Here in Australia, we have some of the most poisonous snakes in the World! Which makes them extra scary for some kids 🙂

  2. Melissa — I spent some time working at a zoo and I made a few observations about kids and snakes. First, many kids were NOT afraid of them and would volunteer to touch them. Those that were scared, I felt that they were afraid of snakes because their parents had taught them to be scared of snakes either because they told them they were dangerous or they were scared of them themselves. Also, kids thought snakes were going to be slimy, and after touching them were surprised that they were not creepy.

Before I got my job at the zoo I was a little nervous about snakes — only touching them once before. However, after handling them every day at work I realized that they were a very calming creature. Working with the snakes was extremely enjoyable.

I hope this helps. If you have more specific questions let me know. If I don’t know the answer, I am sure I can get someone to answer your question.

    • That’s fantastic Eric 🙂 I’m writing a story about a kid who is scared of snakes, but once he gets to know one, he’s not scared any more. I figured if I know specific things that scare kids, I can address them in the story.

If I have more questions, I’ll shoot them through, if that’s OK 🙂

  3. I agree with Cathy. I think the fact that some snakes are deadly makes all snakes seem scary. Also snakes are sneaky (read- well camouflaged). You rarely see them until you are right on top of them. There is also the misconception that snakes are slimy when really they are just smooth skinned.

  4. I agree with whats been written so far. Yes, kids would think they are slimey. They may have seen movies or shows where a boa constrictor has crushed someone or something and when a snake is draped over their shoulders and starts to curl around they may panic. The shed skin … ugh! The way their jaw can open to swallow just about anything … kids are little you know! I think also the speed in which they can move.
I suppose it will depend on what they have seen of snakes on tv – a lot of those ‘nature’ shows make snakes out to be deadly and will strike at a moments notice, are fast and can kill. The fact that snakes are generally more afraid of you and rather keep out of your way is, funnily enough, not usually mentioned on those shows. Probably wouldnt make good tv! 😉

  5. Sounds like a great idea for a book 🙂
